“People see wearing a mask as a sign that you’re a good person… ‘An example of my moral character. This gives me a pedestal over other people who DON’T do this because they are irresponsible and selfish, but I’m not, because look at my mask.’ It doesn’t matter that masks don’t work to prevent transmision of a virus. Somehow that’s insconsequential. Fauci says it’s a ‘symbol.’ I don’t know about you guys, but if it doesn’t work, I’m not gonna do it — I’m not gonna do something just for symbolism.” 🗣 Today I talk about the terms “virtue signaling” and “performative allyship.” I discuss them both as it relates to mask-wearing during Covid and the public display of support for racial equality in the country.
